Deltaland: signing up
"Mom and Dad, what goes on at the bank?" The next time you hear that question, hold the long-winded explanation about tax planning and the falling dollar. Instead, take your financially inquisitive tyke over to DeltaLand, a bank for kids recently opened by local financial institution DeltaBank, where kids can learn all about the joys of credit, receive their own bankcards, and even open a personal account.

Located inside Detsky Mir on Teatralny Proyezd, DeltaLand’s sleek, futuristic-looking interior features much of what you’ve come to expect at a bank, including cash machines, teller windows and security guards. DeltaLand offers a full range of banking services — but the omnipresent reams of drawing paper, rows of arcade machines, and a host of cartoon characters on the wall cheerfully brandishing their bankcards are a dead giveaway that this is not your ordinary bank.

Space age: internet room
At DeltaLand, your children are taught all the finer points of dealing with money — how to make a withdrawal or deposit with a bankcard, how to use a credit card, and even (if they are truly interested) about more complicated subjects such as interest and financial products — by a staff of bank employees specially trained to work with kids. In between seminars on managing their finances, children can participate in drawing and puzzle-solving contests, hit the computers in the Internet room, watch cartoons on a large-screen television, or battle aliens at the video arcade, all under the watchful eye of a caretaker. All of the children’s services are free.

So how does it all work? Kids from ages 6 to 18 can open an account at DeltaLand. Predictably, if your children want to open an account and they’re under 14, you have to open an account with DeltaBank; kids age 14 and up can open an account without their parents’ permission. Once that is taken care of, your miniature Rockefellers receive their own Visa Electron bankcard and may withdraw cash to their heart’s content — or up to the limit that you set (minimum limit is $10). Cash can be withdrawn and deposited in dollars or rubles, and all transactions are free of charge. If your kids are Russian citizens, they can also receive a Visa credit card for which you determine the credit limit.

DeltaLand customers receive discounts at nearby Detsky Mir — the perfect place for kids to put their newly acquired skills into practice.
