Michael Gira: B2, Sept. 23
Issue 9
September 9 - October 7, 2004

angel of light: Michael Gira
Born in the late ’50s to an international businessman and a housewife in the suburbs of Los Angeles, Michael Gira had a troubled childhood followed by an art-college education — and went on to form the now-legendary New York band Swans in 1981-82.

The Swans’ early music has been described as “aggressive beyond words,” with a mixture of slow grinding guitars and violent lyrics, although their sound mellowed in later years. In 1997, Gira finally got tired of the Swans, and disbanded the group before establishing his new band, Angels of Light, in 1999.

In Moscow, Gira is expected to present a short program specially tailored for a one-man performance that will feature a number of songs from the glorious Swans days as well as recent Angels of Light releases.
