Some rare wines with royal pedigree will be up for grabs on Dec. 3, when Sotheby’s auction house holds a sale of “Massandra Collection” bottles from the cellars of the tsars. The Massandra winery was built in the late 19th century to provide wine for the tsar’s summer palace near Yalta in the Crimea. The Massandra Collection, begun by Prince Golitsyn soon after the winery’s founding, contains examples of every vintage the winery has produced, as well as some European wines from the prince’s personal collection. Some of the rarities up for sale at the London auction include three half bottles of 1848 Paharet Sherry (estimated sale price 150-200 pounds) and 1895 Livadia “First Press” Liqueur Cabernet Sauvigion (estimated sale price 2,800-3,800 pounds per bottle).
