Finland Independence Night: B2, Dec. 5
By Sergey Chernov
Issue 12
December 2, 2004 - February 10, 2005

Giant Robot: Sextet
Mieskuoro Huutajat, or the “Huutajat Screaming Men,” headlines a multi-media festival featuring a bunch of vastly diverse, fringe Finnish bands that are to perform in Moscow on the eve of Finland’s Independence Day.

Hailing from the northern Finnish town of Oulu, this 20-plus choir, formally dressed in black suits, white shirts and rubber ties, performs national anthems, traditional and children’s songs in an unlikely manner — they actually scream in unison. Their versions of Finnish, American and Russian anthems are instant live hits.

Cleaning Women is a different take on weirdness; this soft-industrial all-male band performs in drag, playing modified household equipment such as drying racks. For its new album, “Aelita,” based on the 1924 Soviet silent sci-fi film of the same name, the band used the vocals of Yevgeny Fyodorov of St. Petersburg’s leading alt-rock band Tequilajazzz, who will join Cleaning Women for one song at the concert.

The off-the-wall duo La Sega Del Canto seems to share Clearing Women’s penchant for unorthodox instruments, playing a saw with a bow.

Even against such a backdrop, the Helsinki-based multicultural sextet Giant Robot, infamous for its ironic rock anthem “Helsinki Rock City,” doesn’t sound banal, offering a strong blend of rocking riffs, hip-hop and dub.

Set to take up two rooms at B2, the all-night celebration of Finish music and arts — complete with DJ sets from Lil’ Tony and Kuuro Kadeton Paisti — is to be accompanied by screenings of Aki Kaurismaki’s lesser-known films, as well as the works of younger Finnish film directors.
